Carol was raised by parents who had little experience with children. In addition, she experienced much emotional trauma and did not learn coping skills from her parents to effectively deal with what was happening around her. Carol’s way to cope was to drink and this began at the young age of nine.

Carol is the oldest of five living children and at the age of 20 graduated from college as a registered nurse. During her childhood, her grandfather owned a bar where alcohol was consumed as a coping strategy. Being a nurse at such a young age, coupled with a traumatic childhood, Carol really did not trust authority figures and was reticent to speak up; her job as a charge nurse was too much of a responsibility. Carol started abusing drugs (opiates and sedatives) that she took from her employer to cope with home and work stressors. This is not the end of her story. Because Carol was so forthcoming about her life and successful experience with Alternative Interventions for Women, a program of Court Clinic, and wanted to help others, she was featured on Local 12 and was interviewed by Liz Bonis.
